Firefighters were notified early Sunday evening that a fire was underway in the Pastures district of Binche, in a building that should be demolished to make way for a real estate project, disputed by residents.
This is the third outbreak of fire in three months on this site which should be brought down in order to make way for a real estate project consisting of the construction of an 8000 m² shopping centre, around a hundred housing units and car parks in the Pasture district.
The local residents had pleaded their case before a commission of the Walloon region and the Appeals Unit for Commercial Establishments. Having failed to convince, they filed an appeal before the Council of State.
The fire was intentional.
