Countries in Latin America and Africa Urge Action on Climate Change and Biodiversity Conservation

Countries in Latin America and Africa call on industrialized countries to help fight climate change and protect biodiversity. In a statement adopted today at the Amazon Summit, a dozen countries are calling for funding mechanisms to conserve forests.

They also insist on the promises made by rich countries to provide developing countries with 100 billion dollars a year for climate protection. They also call on developed countries to meet the commitment to provide $200 billion a year for biodiversity conservation.

Eight South American countries also agreed to form an alliance to combat deforestation. According to host country Brazil, a “new and ambitious common agenda” to save the rainforest has been adopted. For activists, the resolutions did not go far enough – it was a “list of promises” without concrete commitments.
