The heavily decimated “Adler” – six regular players were missing – also showed a really strong performance in the last pre-season match once morest league rivals HC Pustertal and deservedly won with 4:3 goals. The goals, some of which were wonderful, were scored by Alex Wall, Robert Sabolic, Alexander Rauchwald and John Hughes.

Without goalie JP Lamoureux, Arturs Kulda, Layne Viveiros, Andrew Desjardins, Kevin Hancock and Anthony Luciani, but with many young players, the “Adlers” started the match once morest their league rivals from the Puster Valley. A balanced, fast-paced match developed in which the guests took the lead 1-0 in the 5th minute through Daniel Catenacci from close range. In the ninth minute, VSV striker Blaz Tomasevic appeared dangerously in front of Pustertal goalie Jacob Smith for the first time, but he mightn’t get the puck into the guests’ goal. But in the 14th minute the time had come: A dream pass from Mark Katic found the breaking Alex Wall, who moved to Smith alone and carefully lifted the puck into the right corner for the deserved 1-1 equalizer. But that wasn’t all in the first third: Five seconds before the end, Robert Sabolic sank the puck into the net with a 5-on-3 advantage, perfectly served by John Hughes, for a 2-1 lead.

In the second half of the game, the Blue and Whites pressed and wanted the next goal. In the 22nd minute it was John Hughes who was narrowly denied by Pustertal goalie Smith. In return, however, the guests used a 5-on-3 advantage (Dominik Prodinger and Marco Steiner were in the penalty box) to equalize 2-2 (25th). Jason Akeson scored the goal with a one-timer right into the top corner. Towards the end of the middle third, the “Eagles” had two opportunities to gain the advantage in a row: the first one remained unused, but the blue-whites did not miss the second chance. Once once more it was John Hughes who perfectly set up Alexander Rauchwald, who scored dryly to make it 3-2 (35′). In addition, VSV goalie Rene Swette presented herself as a very strong and secure support during some of the Pustertal team’s dangerous attacks.

The guests started the last part of the game with a lot of momentum – the South Tyroleans repeatedly appeared dangerous in front of Rene Swette. In the 44th minute, the attacking efforts were crowned with success: Zach Sill pushed the puck over the line to equalize 3:3. In the 49th minute, John Hughes had Villach’s new lead on his stick, but his deflection went just past the visitors’ goal. The “Adlers” did better in the 55th minute of the game: It was another wonderful action via Robert Sabolic and Alexander Rauchwald, which this time “Assist King” John Hughes skillfully completed to take the lead 4:3.
