From insider tip to global star? sudan archives was in the bright trout and really showed everything she can do!
Admittedly, I didn’t have “Sudan Archives” on my screen at all. The organizer himself advised me that I should definitely see this artist. I always happily accept recommendations from music connoisseurs and so it happened that that evening I made my way to the flashy trout to see “Sudan Archives”.
In preparation, I had of course read the very good Pitchfork album review and listened to their songs on a continuous loop. So I knew what to expect and so I rushed to the front as soon as I arrived – there was a real crackling in the air and I wanted to experience everything as closely as possible. and then it started very soon with “queensdlightas a support act. This lady effortlessly rapped her way into the hearts of several of those present and prepared us well for the rest of the evening.
and then came “sudan archives“ onto the stage with her violin and in a very skimpy outfit and immediately delighted us with a song. She tossed her long hair around, did gymnastics, played the violin and sang into her microphone, which was glued to her face. Those who move around a lot sometimes find themselves out of breath more often: Sudan Archives often covered this up with small “squeaks” so that any wheezing might no longer be heard. At least that’s my theory.
Due to lack of space, the whole setting in the garish Forelle was of course kept to a minimum: most of the music came via a backing track, which was always started by a DJ, only the vocals and the violin were live. I imagined in my mind how amazing the songs would sound with a full live band – when I woke up from my “daydreams” there were only simple violin sounds, which sometimes even leaned slightly towards Irish folk music. In any case, the feeling that “it wouldn’t be enough” always improved in the moments when she rapped more and thus brought more energy and dynamism into her songs.
Even if the sound wasn’t always 100% perfect, I was still impressed by their “show”: how you might get so much out of just movement and dancing with a violin was remarkable. Once she even crawled along the floor, once she hopped right on top of me to get into the audience area to continue performing there. Her short “hot in here” interlude was also a highlight because it was damn warm in the bright trout!
Her better-known hits were of course the highlights that stood out at her Vienna performance: “Selfish Soul”, “Come More Way” and “Confessions” sent the audience into real ecstasy. But the guest appearance of “Queensdlight” was also acclaimed. And of course the cheering was right: “Sudan Archives” has secured unmistakable recognition value with their music, their appearance and their attitude. On that November day she wasn’t yet a global star – but what isn’t can still become. There is definitely still a lot waiting for “sudan archives”!
