Windows 10’s monthly updates, which arrive on Patch Tuesdays, are essential for keeping systems up to date with the latest security and performance adjustments — but the files that Microsoft offers do not always work for everyone, and may reveal new errors.

That’s what happened with update KB5031356, distributed on October 10. Some users have experienced installation issues, such as the “8007000D (ERROR_INVALID_DATA)” error. If you are affected by this, see below how to fix it.

Microsoft learned of the issue quickly and delivered a solution to affected users. To correct the error automatically, follow these steps:

Access Windows “Settings”. Go to “Update & Security” and click “Recovery.” Under “Start now,” select “Repair Windows update errors.”

For business users under system administration, Microsoft will offer a solution known as “Known Issue Rollback” (KIR) that will be automatically applied in the coming days. Non-enterprise users will just need to try reinstalling the update through Windows Update.

In case of an advanced solution, you can try the following procedure:

Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges. Run the command “Dism /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth.” After System Restore is complete, check Windows Update once more for updates.

Remember to make a backup before making any significant changes to the system. It is always advisable to wait for the automatic solution if you are not comfortable with advanced procedures.
