The video platform Tiktok says it deleted around four million videos reported as “harmful” in the EU in September. The subsidiary of the Chinese Bytedance group said on Wednesday that 6,125 employees were busy “moderating” content in the EU. A new EU law once morest illegal content on the Internet recently requires major online platforms to produce regular “transparency reports” on their efforts.
The so-called Digital Services Act (DSA) came into force in August. Very large online providers face massive penalties if they do not take action once morest misinformation, hate messages and copyright infringements. Tiktok and 18 other platforms fall into this category because they have more than 45 million monthly users in the EU.
Tiktok says in its first report that it has launched a tool to allow European users to report illegal content in accordance with DSA obligations. In the first month, 35,000 reports were received for 24,000 videos. Action was taken once morest 16 percent of these videos.
According to the information, around a third of the 6,125 “content moderators” at Tiktok edit videos in English. German-speaking and French-speaking employees follow in second and third place. The team includes speakers of the EU’s official languages, as well as commonly spoken other languages such as Turkish and Arabic.
