Police in the Hermeton and Heure area are calling residents’ attention to a rear-view mirror scam occurring in the area. The perpetrators are traveling in a car registered in France and they approach people they consider to be more vulnerable.
Two facts have been reported in recent days. Here is their modus operandi: they spot elderly people leaving a parking lot following doing shopping, in the four arms zone. They follow them to their home where one of the perpetrators makes them believe that they have snagged and broken their rearview mirror. “Pressure is put on the victims regarding a high deductible as well as the possible loss of their driving license,” report the police. The authors present the facts arguing that an amicable settlement is preferable. Then, they accompany their victim to the bank to receive sometimes more than €2,000.
These people are traveling in a dark car registered in France, they are two men wearing a surgical mask for Covid.
There is therefore reason to remain cautious, and in the event of a collision, call 101 to contact the police.
