EU mood in Austria better than often assumed

Vienna (OTS) – The political priorities of the European Union are meeting with increasing approval in Austria. People also have a better image of the EU than they did six months ago. This is shown by the 100th Standard Eurobarometer survey commissioned by the European Commission.

63% of respondents in Austria support a common EU defense and security policy – 7 percentage points more than last, and 62% (+3 percentage points) support a common EU foreign policy. Across the EU, 44% (-1 percentage point) of respondents have a positive image of the EU, 18% (+/-0 percentage points) have a negative one.

“The survey shows that the EU mood in Austria is basically better than is often assumed,” says Martin Selmayr, head of the European Commission representation in Austria. “Many people in Austria criticize EU policy just as intensely as they criticize national decisions. “Most Austrians are obviously very aware that we in Europe have to work together to overcome the current challenges in the areas of energy supply, climate protection, competitiveness and security.”

Great support for EU aid to Ukraine

The percentage of respondents in Austria who think their vote counts in the EU has also increased – by 6 percentage points to 57%. Here Austria is well above the EU average of 43%. “In the EU, every individual’s vote counts – especially in the European elections in June 2024,” emphasizes Selmayr. “It’s regarding setting the course for the future development of our common Europe. We should therefore all join in the discussion, go to the polls and have a say.”

The 100th Eurobarometer survey took place between October 23 and November 17, 2023. 1,005 people aged 15 and over in Austria and 26,471 in the 27 EU member states were surveyed.
