Magnus Carlsen hardly knows it any other way: he was world champion in classical chess for ten years, and the 33-year-old still clearly leads the world rankings. But Carlsen gave up his world title in the long-deliberation game without a fight this year. Ding Liren became his direct successor and the first Chinese chess world champion ever with a match victory over Jan Nepomnjaschtschi.
