“Over the past five years, China has significantly expanded its nuclear modernization program, fielding more types of nuclear weapons in greater quantities than ever before,” it says in the document. According to FAS experts, the country has approximately 500 nuclear warheads. A year ago, the organization estimated China’s nuclear potential at 410 warheads.
According to CNN, China increased activity at nuclear test sites. Jeffrey Lewis, a professor at the Center for Research at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, recalled that China has not tested nuclear bombs underground since 1996.
