Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges as Fossil Fuel Dependence Declines

In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) highlights that renewable energy capacity additions reached record levels in 2023, with solar and wind power leading the expansion. The agency’s annual review notes that new solar and wind installations accounted for 82% of all new power capacity added globally, marking a significant shift away from fossil fuels.

In Asia, China continues to dominate renewable energy deployment, though its growth has slowed slightly compared to previous years. The IRENA report indicates that China’s renewable energy installations made up more than 50% of the global total in 2023, though the pace of expansion has moderated due to economic challenges.
