The start of the season hasn’t been over for who knows how long. The onset of winter at the beginning of December created a good mood in various ski areas. In principle, skiing can also be done on white bands made from purely machine-produced snow. But it’s a lot more fun for winter sports fans when off-piste there aren’t just a few sad patches of snow covering trees, meadows and rocks. A white winter landscape is also helpful for marketing, but natural snow is no longer absolutely necessary for skiing in many areas.
For the mechanical production of snow – and thus reliable and predictable slope preparation – you “only” need sufficiently cold temperatures. Sometimes snow is produced well before the start of the season in order to be prepared. Technical snowmaking, i.e. infrastructure with snow cannons, is becoming increasingly important. As climate change progresses, the temperatures and altitudes at which natural white can be expected are increasing. This does not mean that there are no longer snowy winters even at lower altitudes, but they will become less frequent in the future. The great promise of snow security is naturally becoming increasingly difficult to keep for many areas.
