More than 200,000 people lost their lives and $152 billion in damage was caused.

Yet two years ago, Western leaders seemed to anticipate a short-lived conflict.

“One of two things: either we told each other stories or those who were in charge almost everywhere in the West told us stories?” affirms TVA Nouvelles contributor Stéphan Bureau.

Russia, which was said to be corrupt and weak, had to quickly put an end to its invasion due to economic sanctions, according to several Western countries, recalls Stéphan Bureau.

“At the start, it was said that the unprecedented economic sanctions, almost alone, would job and that we would succeed in suffocating the Russian economy so that the country would not be able to support its war effort, he mentions. However, two years later, it is clear that the Russian economy is not doing so badly: growth of 3.6% in its GDP, while in the euro zone, it is stagnating.

From a military point of view, the courage of the Ukrainian forces combined with the financial support of NATO was to overcome the Russian army. However, two years later, the latter is well established in Ukraine.
