HONOLULU, Hawaii – It was a marathon of a match as Big West foes Long Beach State and Hawaii battled out a hard-fought and nearly four-hour contest on Sunday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Beach rallied, but ultimately dropped a 4-3 decision to the Rainbow Wahine.

Hawaii (5-5, 4-0 Big West) started the match off strong as flight two saw Kelly Knezkova and Sheena Masuda defeat Long Beach State’s (4-4, 2-1 Big West) Doga Akyurek and Hana Becirovic Novak, 6-1. However, the Beach rallied on courts three and one to claim the doubles point.

At flight three, Paulina Franco Martinessi and Mathilde Tranberg edged Anna Kern and Hannah Galindo, 7-5, in a closely contested match. At flight one, Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt made a huge comeback and won the tiebreaker 7-6 (7) as Long Beach went up 1-0.

The Beach got a solid showing from Tranberg at flight six as she knocked off Kern, 6-2, 6-2 to put LBSU up 2-0 over the Bows.

Hawaii managed to get on the board following Justine Dondonay came up short at flight four in a 6-2, 6-2, setback to Galindo.

The Bows tied things up as Nikola Homolkova defeated Akyurek at flight three, 7-5, 6-3.

With the match knotted at 2-2, Knezkova and Ramstedt were in a heated battle at flight two. Knezkova won the first set, 7-6 (4), before holding off Ramstedt, 6-2 in the second set to gibe Hawaii a 3-2 lead.

Cook came up with a huge victory at flight one where she faced No. 99 Vilcek. Vilcek took the opening set, 6-1, but Cook came back in dominant fashion in the second set winning 6-1 to force a third set. Cook and Vilcek traded points early on, but Cook pulled away to win 6-4 evening the score at 3-3.

At court five, the deciding game was being played between LBSU’s Sarah Medik and UH’s Masuda. Medik had earned a 6-2 win in the first set, and Masuda took set two, 6-3. The two fought each other back and forth and Medik went up 4-3, but Masuda managed to come back and win 6-4 to give the Bows the set and match.
