The Šiupinis festival is a party organized by Lithuanians on the occasion of Mardi Gras, during which Šiupinis porridge is tasted, and an artistic program (songs, dances) takes place. in 1927 The Klaipėda Lithuanian Women’s Society organized the first Šiupinis festival at Bumbulienė’s website. Since then, it has been held every year. The profit received was allocated to funds supporting charity, culture and art.
For several years, this celebration was held at the Victoria Hotel, later at the Klaipėda City Hall – at Šauliai’s House.
Lithuanians used to prepare for the Šiupini festival in advance, because it was their representative event, as well as an integral part of the country’s cultural life.
In 1786, in the ethnographic region of Little Lithuania, which at that time was part of East Prussia, King Friedrich Wilhelm banned street carnivals. Violation of the ban threatened huge fines, so Mardi Gras moved to closed premises. After the Second World War, the traditions of the Šiupini festival started to be celebrated in communities of expatriate Lithuanians took on the function of strengthening ethnic identity, and the Šiupini festival organized these days is becoming an important sign of the culture of the ethnographic region of Lithuania Minor.
The city of Klaipėda was represented at the celebration of the declaration of Lithuanian intangible cultural heritage values and their inclusion in the Code, priest Jonas Lioranšas, dr.
