GODZILLA x Kong: The New Empire topped the United States (US) Box Office in its first weekend following earning US$80 million in ticket sales.

“The final figures may change on Monday (1/4) but this achievement is extraordinary,” said Box Office observer David A Gross following ticket sales for the monster film reached 2.5 times higher than the average for sequel films.

In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the two monsters ignore their differences and unite to save their species and humanity.

Second place with US$15.7 million went to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, written by Jason Reitman, whose father, Ivan Reitman, was the director of the 1984 film Ghostbusters.

The film pits new ghost hunters (Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon) once morest veterans (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson) as they face a terrifying enemy that wants to bring back the Ice Age.

Meanwhile, Dune: Part Two was ranked third. The Warner Bros. production film earned US$11.1 million.

Fourth place, down one place from the previous week, is the animated film produced by Universal and DreamWorks Animatino, Kung Fu Panda 4, which earned US$10.2 million.

The psychological horror film Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, was in fifth place with US$3.3 million. (AFP/Z-1)
