The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has just launched its “Love Life” campaign which focuses on tests to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis or chlamydia. Problem: a screening can cost up to 300 francs, a price that is far too high for many young people.
“The condom is still important, but it is no longer the only way to protect yourself,” declared Anne Lévy, director of the OFSP at 19:30 on the occasion of the launch of the “Love Life” campaign.
This year, the emphasis is on “self-examination” to stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis or chlamydia.
Up to 300 francs
The catch is that people without symptoms usually have to pay for the tests themselves. And their costs vary between 100 and 300 francs depending on the canton and the analysis laboratory, an amount that discourages many young people.
When asked regarding free access, the Federal Office of Public Health replies that they support financial counseling and screening in specialized centres. “In Zurich, the city currently offers young people free advice and testing,” notes the OFSP, which says it is following this pilot project with interest.
The price should not be a barrier, insists Léonie Chinet, director of PROFA, the foundation for the promotion of sexual health in Switzerland.
“In the sexual health centers mentioned on the page Lovelife.ch(…) there is an opportunity to adjust the prices or even provide free entry, especially for young people”, she recalls.
