A new study has revealed that watching a certain number of weight loss videos on TikTok can be quite harmful to mental health.
According to research conducted by Charles Sturt University in Australia, spending too much time on the social media platform TikTok, especially watching pro-anorexia content, can damage a young girl’s self-esteem and cause her to lose weight. The risk of disorder may increase.
“Our study shows that in less than 10 minutes, implicit and explicit pro-anorexia TikTok content is associated with physical states and It has negative effects in terms of appearance’.
The TikTok app has more than one billion monthly active users worldwide.

Study participants who were exposed to pro-anorexia content reported feeling worse about themselves and said they needed to be thinner.
Surveying them about their TikTok use, attitudes toward body image and beauty standards, the researchers looked for signs of disordered eating and an unhealthy obsession with “pure” or “healthy” foods. Calculated their risk for “orthorexia”.
Half of the participants then watched seven to eight minutes of random food and drink content from TikTok, which included young women who offered weight loss tips while starving, such as curbing appetite. So eat ice and chewing gum, or promote exercise or juice and show off your toned waist.

Other participants viewed neutral content related to nature, cooking, animals, or comedy.
Both groups reported a decrease in satisfaction with their body image after screening the videos.
To combat this problem, the study’s authors are recommending “tighter controls and regulations” on pro-anorexia, disordered eating and body-related TikTok content.
