The bad E word was used in the election campaign: E for expropriation. Real estate is constantly being expropriated in Austria for infrastructure projects, even in 2024, as can be seen in Wiener Neustadt. When it comes to affordable housing, however, this is much more difficult, not to say impossible. Although of course – after all, we live in a constitutional state – we only ever talk about expropriations in return for compensation.
