The December festivities in Antioquia began with alarming numbers: 30 people have been burned with gunpowder in just one week, according to the department’s health agencies.

The city of Medellín concentrates the majority of cases, with 13 injured, while other municipalities such as Girardota, Bello, Itagüí, Caucasia and Cisneros also report serious incidents.

One of the most critical cases occurred in the municipality of Ebéjico, where an 18-year-old young man suffered third-degree burns on his hand when handling a rocket.

In Cisneros, a 42-year-old man was injured by a tote explosion.

The authorities continue to carry out campaigns to prevent the number of gunpowder burns from increasing. However, it is essential that citizens become aware of the dangers to which they are exposed.

Against this backdrop, the authorities announced a massive deployment of 4,000 police officers throughout the department and 1,200 in Medellín, focused on the seizure of gunpowder and the control of dangerous activities.

The Dagrd, for its part, issued recommendations to avoid incidents during Candle Day, such as keeping children away from candles and gunpowder, avoiding lighting them near gas appliances and checking electrical installations to prevent overloads.

Carlos Andrés Quintero, director of Dagrd, highlighted that this month there have already been six structural fires caused by fuse balloons and another caused by a flyer. “The call is for a safe Christmas and co-responsibility in our homes,” he said.

With these measures, the authorities hope to reduce incidents and guarantee security in the 16 communes and five townships of Medellín, with emphasis on the protection of minors, who are the main victims of these emergencies.
