Uganda’s Ranchers Finest Exports First Processed Beef Consignment to Ethiopia
Uganda has begun exporting processed beef to Ethiopia after Ranchers Finest Ltd dispatched its first shipment to the Diamond Hotel and Restaurant Group. The deal involves a monthly supply of approximately 20 tonnes of processed meat products, including steaks, sausages, and lamb, according to company officials.
How did Ranchers Finest secure the Ethiopian contract?
Ranchers Finest secured the export agreement through a competitive procurement process. According to the company, the selection was based on its adherence to international food safety standards, specifically HACCP certification and ISO 22000:2018. CEO Collin Muyanja stated that the agreement indicates growing confidence in the Ugandan meat industry and is expected to facilitate further export opportunities within Ethiopia and other regional markets.

Why is Uganda shifting from live animal exports to processed meat?
The Ugandan government is prioritizing value addition to retain more wealth within the country and increase employment. Dr. Hillary Emmanuel Musoke Kisanja, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Agribusiness, described the shipment as a landmark for the livestock industry during the flag-off ceremony at the Kawempe processing facility.
Dr. Musoke argued that processing meat “from the farm to the fork” creates jobs in quality assurance, packaging, transportation, marketing, and slaughtering. He urged Ugandan citizens to return to farming and animal rearing to meet the rising demand for processed meat. According to Dr. Musoke, this shift allows Uganda to compete more effectively in regional markets compared to the export of live animals.
What are the economic impacts of processed meat exports?
Exporting processed products rather than live livestock allows Uganda to capture a higher share of the value generated by the livestock sector. Collin Muyanja noted that this strategy increases export revenues and improves product traceability. He stated that the company’s operations support government goals regarding industrialization and export-led growth.
Dr. Musoke called on investors and farmers to support companies engaged in value addition to maximize the returns from the country’s livestock resources. He credited the management of Ranchers Finest for positioning Uganda as a reliable supplier of meat products that meet global safety standards.
