DIY giant B&Q is bolstering its presence in Ireland with the acquisition of three former Homebase stores for £3.2 million (€3.86 million). This strategic move adds over 9,300 square meters of retail space to B&Q’s existing network of eight stores in the Republic.
The acquired stores are located in Waterford, Letterkenny, and Navan. The purchase is contingent upon approval from landlords and regulatory bodies. B&Q plans to commence rebranding the first store between January and June 2024, with the completion of all three store conversions slated for the end of 2025.
This expansion comes amidst the closure of Homebase’s Irish operations. In December 2023, the High Court in Dublin appointed provisional liquidators after Homebase’s Irish entity, HHGL (ROI) Ltd, was placed into official liquidation. The court heard that Homebase Ireland employed 178 people across its eight stores.
While about 70 of Homebase’s UK stores were acquired by rival chain The Range, the future of the remaining Irish branches. The High Court in Dublin approved the sale of some Homebase assets in Ireland to The Range, with three bidders vying for stores in Sligo and Nutgrove, Dublin, employing a combined workforce of 50.
