Children’s Literature thrives in Irish Libraries

Children’s literature solidified its dominance in Irish libraries last year,capturing the top spots on borrowing charts. Beloved series like “Dog Man” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” continued too captivate young readers, demonstrating a sustained passion for thes popular titles.

Remarkably, children’s and young adult books held the first 37 positions on both in-house and online borrowing lists, illustrating the enduring appeal of this genre.Liz Nugent’s acclaimed crime novel, “Strange Sally Diamond,” broke this trend, securing the 38th position as the highest-ranking adult book.

“Dog Man” Packs a Powerful Punch

Dave Pilkey’s “Dog man” series reigned supreme, occupying three of the top six most-borrowed spots. “Dog Man: The Adventures of Dog Man 2: Unleashed,” and “Dog Man: A Tale of Two Kitties” captivated readers, garnering a combined 17,395 borrows. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: No Brainer” by Jeff kinney, alongside additional “Dog Man” entries, rounded out the top six. Four installments from Jamie Smart’s “Bunny Vs Monkey” series further solidified the dominance of children’s literature in the top ten.

Stuart Hamilton, head of libraries advancement with the LGMA, highlighted the importance of these findings:

“Not for the first time, children’s titles have dominated the most borrowed books in Irish libraries, reflecting well on efforts to improve reading among children and teenagers. This can be supported by creating a habit amongst adults and children of visiting our public libraries, which have hundreds of resources to suit all interests.”
