Ukraine’s gas infrastructure has been severely damaged by recent Russian missile strikes, raising concerns about the country’s ability to meet its energy needs during the remainder of the heating season. The Minister of Energy has confirmed the attacks, stating that thay specifically targeted production facilities.
Russian Strikes Cause Important Damage
On the night of February 20, russia launched another wave of missile attacks against Ukraine’s gas infrastructure. Minister of Energy German Galushchenko confirmed the damage, stating, “the damage received, in particular, production capacities. As soon as the situation allows, experts will begin to assess damage and recovery work.”
He believes these strikes are aimed at halting gas production within Ukraine. “Several missiles flew around the fuel production facilities,” Galushchenko noted.
Limited Reserves and soaring Prices
This is not the first time Russian forces have targeted Ukraine’s gas production. Previous attacks in late January and early February forced Ukrainian companies to rapidly deplete their gas storage reserves. By February 18, reserves had dwindled to 2.2 billion cubic meters, representing only 7.3% of total capacity. At the current rate of consumption, Ukraine coudl run out of active gas reserves by April, coinciding with the end of the heating season.
As a result of these attacks, Ukraine has been forced to resume imported fuel. the price for Ukrainian companies has surged to over $700 per thousand cubic meters, a two-year high.

Ukraine’s average daily gas production is approximately 50 million cubic meters.Experts estimate that this figure could drop by 20% following the recent strikes.
