When I started HAL Laboratory, I wanted to make games that would make people smile.Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine we’d grow into such a respected developer, working on iconic franchises and∼ partnerships. Our journey has been an remarkable ride.

The Birth of Kirby and Beyond

A: HAL Laboratory is synonymous with the beloved Kirby series. Tell us about the creation of Kirby and how he became the company’s mascot.

MI: Kirby was born out of our desire to create a protagonist that was accessible and appealing to a wide audience. masahiro Sakurai and the team wanted a character that could represent HAL Laboratory’s playful, imaginative spirit. kirby’s unique abilities and href=”https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirby#Kirby%27s_Abilities”>copying mechanics turned him into a fan favorite, making him the perfect symbol for our studio.

A: While Kirby is undoubtedly a staple, HAL Laboratory has also contributed to other major franchises like Pokémon. How does the company approach working on established IPs compared to its own original concepts?

MI: When working on established IPs, we aim to respect the source material while adding our unique touch. Our goal is to provide fresh perspectives and experiences that both honor the original and offer somthing new to fans. With our own original concepts, we have complete creative freedom, which allows us to explore innovative ideas and push boundaries.

Looking Ahead: The Future of HAL Laboratory

A: It’s been a few years as HAL Laboratory’s last major release. Are there any exciting projects in the works that fans can look forward to?

MI: (Laughs) fans have been incredibly patient, and we appreciate their support. We have a passionate team working on something truly special – I can’t reveal too much just yet, but I can assure you that it’s a project we’re all deeply excited about. Stay tuned!

A: Might we see a new Kirby title on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2?
