India’s National Bio Entrepreneurship Competition (NBEC) is gearing up for its 2025 edition, promising to once again be a catalyst for innovation and investment in the life sciences sector. Launched in 2017, NBEC has served as a vital platform for bio-entrepreneurs, fostering the development of groundbreaking, science-driven ideas. The competition aims to identify and nurture the next generation of leaders who will transform the landscape of biotechnology and healthcare.The competition has already proven its impact. Past winners have secured significant investor attention, received media recognition both nationally and globally, and gone on to achieve further success. To date, NBEC has propelled 112 promising young entrepreneurs to the forefront.

This year, NBEC 2025 is casting a wide net, seeking innovative, scalable business concepts across a diverse range of life sciences domains. Specifically, the competition is targeting ideas within:

Agri Tech & Mol Bio: This category includes everything from conventional plant breeding techniques to cutting-edge genetic engineering, molecular diagnostics, and the application of AI and machine learning in agriculture. Animal health, including diagnostics, therapeutics, and nutrition for veterinary applications, also falls under this category. healthcare: Focus areas include diagnostics, drug revelation and development (encompassing vaccines, therapeutics, biologics, and plant-based medicines), contract research/manufacturing organizations (CRO/CMO/CRAMS), and maternal and child nutrition.
AMR (Antimicrobial Resistance): This crucial area addresses infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, COVID-19, and also rare and neglected diseases.
Digital Health: Ideas leveraging artificial intelligence, machine learning, medical imaging, wearable technology, and healthcare IT solutions are highly encouraged.
Medical Devices: This category seeks innovations in medical device technology.
Habitat: Clean and renewable energy solutions, biofuels, air purification technologies, water and sanitation innovations (including water and solid waste treatment), are all relevant to this category.
industrial Biotechnology: This includes the development of enzymes, fermentation-based products for non-pharmaceutical applications, and bioplastics. also, food and nutraceuticals, including dietary supplements.The competition format consists of four rigorous rounds, spanning four to six months starting in April 2025. NBEC is designed to identify and mentor the most promising ideas, offering participants invaluable exposure and guidance. The process begins wiht an administrative check and due diligence phase, where submitted applications are vetted. NBEC emphasizes originality, clarity, and the presence of a deep-science based biotechnology component. Ideas judged as academic research-oriented rather than business-focused might potentially be disqualified.

The rounds are structured as follows:

Round 1: External Assessment: A panel of experts from industry, academia, and the investment community reviews and shortlists promising ideas.
Round 2: Regional Rounds: Shortlisted applicants present their ideas to a jury panel in a regional setting. Round 3: Pre-Final: Selected applicants attend a two-day entrepreneurship development boot camp, complete with intensive mentoring sessions. The boot camp culminates in a business plan presentation to a pre-final jury panel.
Round 4: Grand Finale: Finalists pitch their ideas to a grand jury, who will select the winners of NBEC 2025. This pitch is key to securing cash prizes and investment opportunities.

Who can apply? NBEC 2025 welcomes applications from a diverse range of individuals and organizations. The eligibility criteria are as follows:

For Student Teams:

Currently enrolled graduate,postgraduate,or phd students.
Teams of up to four members, with a designated team leader.
All team members must possess valid student ids and be Indian citizens. If a company has already been formed, it must be no older than two years at the time of application.
The business idea must be rooted in deep-tech life science.For Companies/Individuals:

start-ups, msmes (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises), and larger companies are all eligible.
Individuals such as post-doctoral researchers, faculty members, scientists, working professionals, and aspiring entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply.
For companies, registration in India and majority Indian ownership are required.
Individual applicants must be Indian citizens.
The business idea must be rooted in deep-tech life science.

The selection criteria are stringent, ensuring that only the most innovative and commercially viable ideas advance through the competition.

Evaluation Criteria for student Teams:

Novelty, scientific validity, feasibility of developing a working solution, and business feasibility are key factors in the selection process starting in Round 1.

Evaluation Criteria for Startups/Individuals:

In addition to the criteria for students, the evaluation considers the business case, commercialization strategy, and scaling and sustainability strategies.

The evaluation process also includes assessing the novelty in the approach or solution:

“Other products/solutions currently available in the market that address this problem and how does your product/solution compare with these products/solutions.”

Throughout the competition, the judging panels assess the scientific validity of the projects. This includes:

“Problem being addressed and the feasibility of the solution based on scientific principles.”

Also, key to evaluation is the ability to translate scientific principles into a prototype.“How the student has applied the scientific principles to develop a working solution/prototype.”

The ability to define a market and potential customers are also key.

“Well – defined customer/customer segment, market size for product/solution have been addressed.”
