Minority Rule,Not Majority,May Be the Real Threat to American Democracy,Experts say
WASHINGTON—for decades, political scientists and commentators have warned about the “tyranny of the majority” in American democracy, where the will of the majority could potentially trample on the rights of individuals and minority groups. However, a growing chorus of experts is now arguing that a different, perhaps more insidious threat is at play: the “tyranny of the minority.”
This emerging perspective suggests that well-organized interest groups and strategically positioned individuals have successfully hijacked the levers of power at various levels of government, enabling them to enact their minoritarian preferences, often at the expense of broader public interests.
The debate is fueled, in part, by a new podcast from The Atlantic, “Good on Paper,” which explores pressing policy questions. In a recent episode, host Jerusalem Demsas, engages with Johns Hopkins University political scientist Steve Teles, author of the essay “Minoritarianism Is Everywhere,” on the causes and consequences of this phenomenon, and they debate potential solutions.
