Mahomes Shuts Down Kelce Retirement Buzz: ‘He’s Motivated’
Amidst swirling speculations about the future of Kansas City Chiefs’ star tight end Travis Kelce, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has emphatically dismissed any immediate retirement concerns. Mahomes’ insights suggest Kelce is gearing up for the 2025 NFL season with renewed vigor.
The Mahomes-Kelce connection has been a defining feature of the Chiefs’ offense since 2018. Recent questions have surfaced about whether the 2025 season might be Kelce’s last. Though, Mahomes’ recent statements paint a different picture.
Mahomes: Kelce Shows No Signs of Slowing Down
“If It’s The Last Ride, You Would Never Know,” Mahomes declared, addressing the rumors surrounding the 35-year-old Kelce. He emphasized Kelce’s dedication: “The way he’s talking about football, the way he’s talking about working and trying to be even better this year than he was last year… He doesn’t seem like a guy that… is tired of the job. He’s in here, he’s working.”
Mahomes further noted Kelce’s improved physical condition, stating,”I know his body feels good. I think it feels better than even last year before going into last season. I think he’s motivated to go out there and have an even better year.”
Kelce’s 2024 Performance Fuels 2025 Drive
Kelce’s determination to elevate his game stems partly from his performance in 2024. While still a commendable season by many measures, it fell short of his usual high standards. His 823 Receiving Yards and three touchdown catches were his lowest as his 2013 rookie season.
Despite a strong divisional-round playoff game against Houston (seven receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown), Kelce’s impact diminished in the Chiefs’ final two games, recording only six receptions for 58 yards. In Super Bowl LIX against the Eagles, he managed just four catches for 39 yards, admitting he “wasn’t at his best” during the loss.
