Belmont Park: A Historic Track Reimagined for the Future of Racing – and a Booming Belmont Stakes Festival
Belmont Park, NY – June 3, 2025 – For decades, Belmont Park has etched itself into the fabric of New York sports history, rivaling even the iconic Madison Square Garden in delivering unforgettable moments. From Victory Gallop’s stunning upset of Real Quiet in the 1998 Triple Crown to American Pharoah’s drought-breaking victory in 2015, and Justify’s triumph in 2018, Belmont has been the stage for racing legends. But the track isn’t resting on its laurels. A massive transformation is underway, poised to redefine the fan experience and solidify Belmont’s position as a premier sporting destination.
A New Era for a Historic Venue
The current Belmont Park, a sprawling 1.25-million square foot concrete structure, is giving way to a modern, 300,000 square foot facility slated for completion in 2026. This isn’t simply a renovation; it’s a reimagining of what a horse racing venue can be. The new design prioritizes fan comfort and engagement, featuring 10,000 seats and, crucially, access to the infield for the first time ever.
“The old facility was built for a different era,” explains NYRA President and CEO David O’Rourke, acknowledging the shift in fan expectations. Today’s racegoers demand more than just a good view – they want a premium experience, ample space, convenient amenities, and seamless connectivity.
Drawing Inspiration from Saratoga’s Success
The redesign is heavily influenced by the wildly popular Saratoga Race course, NYRA’s summer jewel. Saratoga’s success lies in its vibrant atmosphere, open green spaces, and a holistic entertainment experience that extends beyond the races themselves.
“We have consistently heard from fans…that [open green space] is an element that allows Saratoga to stand apart,” says NYRA VP of Communications Pat McKenna. “We are looking forward to taking some of those lessons and applying them at the new Belmont Park.”
Belmont Stakes Festival Expands, Saratoga Steps Up
While Belmont Park undergoes its transformation, the Belmont Stakes has found a temporary, and incredibly successful, home at Saratoga Race Course. The move has proven so popular that the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival is expanding to five days in 2025 – Wednesday through Sunday. Adding to the excitement, saratoga will also host a new four-day July 4th Racing Festival leading into its traditional summer meet. Last year alone, Saratoga generated over $803.8 million in handle and welcomed over one million paid attendees, demonstrating the track’s immense appeal.A Triple Crown Renaissance
The revitalization isn’t limited to New York. All three Triple Crown venues – Belmont Park, Churchill Downs, and Pimlico Race Course – are undergoing significant upgrades, signaling a renewed investment in the future of horse racing.
