Indonesia Backs UN Reform for Real Impact on the Ground

Indonesia is calling for a fundamental shift in the operational capacity of the United Nations, urging that the ongoing reform of the international body result in a multilateral framework capable of producing tangible results for member states.

Tri Tharyat, the outgoing Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Cooperation, stated that the country expects the reform process to yield a strengthened multilateral system that delivers real impact on the ground.

The remarks come as the United Nations continues a structural review aimed at modernizing its governance and response mechanisms. This process follows the broader global effort to update the organization’s architecture to better address 21st-century security and developmental challenges, focusing on the transition from bureaucratic deliberation to actionable outcomes.

For Indonesia, the emphasis on real impact centers on the ability of the UN to effectively manage crises and implement policies that reach local populations. The Indonesian position aligns with a wider push from Global South nations to ensure that multilateral reforms are not limited to administrative changes but translate into improved delivery of humanitarian aid, peacekeeping and sustainable development goals.

The push for a more impactful system coincides with long-standing diplomatic efforts to make the UN more inclusive, particularly regarding the representation of emerging powers in decision-making bodies. Indonesia has consistently advocated for a system where the distribution of authority more accurately reflects the current geopolitical landscape.

The statement arrives as Tri Tharyat prepares to depart from his role as Deputy Minister, leaving the implementation of these diplomatic priorities to his successor within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
