Brazilian Federal Deputy Carla Zambelli Faces Potential Arrest After Leaving Brazil
The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) has requested the pre-trial detention of Brazilian federal deputy Carla Zambelli, following her departure from Brazil. Zambelli had been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF).
Pgr Seeks Arrest Warrant and International Cooperation
According to the arrest request submitted to Minister Alexandre De Moraes, and reviewed by BBC News Brazil, Attorney General Paulo Gonet seeks to freeze Zambelli’s assets, suspend her passport, and place her on Interpol’s list. this action aims to leverage international cooperation among police forces from various countries. The core reason is to ensure she faces justice after her conviction.
Gonet argued that Zambelli should be considered a fugitive. She allegedly fled to Europe after a conviction requiring imprisonment in a closed regime. “This isn’t about anticipating the penalty, but imposing a precautionary arrest,” gonet stated, “to ensure criminal law is properly applied.”
Supreme Court Decision and Zambelli’s Response
The Supreme Court (STF) will now decide weather to issue an arrest warrant. If approved, brazilian authorities will forward the request to the country where Zambelli is located. The decision to honor the warrant rests with that nation’s authorities.
On Tuesday, Brazilian Federal Deputy Zambelli announced she left Brazil for Europe to “fight the lack of freedoms” and alleged censorship in Brazil.
“This isn’t abandoning my country or giving up the fight,” Zambelli stated in a radio interview. “It’s to resist and keep speaking freely, despite this dictatorship’s constraints.”
Zambelli’s Whereabouts and Citizenship
While Zambelli didn’t initially disclose her European destination, she later told CNN she was heading to Italy. She believes her Italian citizenship protects her from deportation back to Brazil.
“As an Italian citizen, thay cannot deport me,” she asserted.
Conflicting reports have emerged regarding Zambelli’s exact location. Initially claiming to be in Italy, her husband later indicated that they were currently in the United States, planning to travel to Italy soon.
zambelli’s than-lawyer, Daniel Bialski, told BBC News Brazil that he was informed she was leaving Brazil for health treatment. Later, he announced he would no longer represent her, citing “intimate forum” reasons.
