Bridgeport is set to construct a state-of-the-art $73 million school specifically designed for students with special needs. Mayor Joe Ganim unveiled the ambitious project, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize special education services within the city.
The new facility will be built on the North End of the city, replacing the current A.B. Skane school, which was built in 1965. this move aims to consolidate resources and provide a dedicated environment for vulnerable students.
“This new facility will be a technical wonder and make us the envy of school districts everywhere,” Mayor Ganim stated in an exclusive interview with news 12 Connecticut. “It will end years of toilsome bussing for hundreds of our most vulnerable students.”
The project received meaningful backing from state lawmakers. Acting School Superintendent Dr. royce Avery expressed gratitude to state officials for securing the necessary funding.
State Rep. Chris Rosario highlighted the importance of the secured funding, noting that it “can’t now be clawed back by the federal government.” He added that the school will offer “relief to the district and the city, in terms of cost-savings, but also peace of mind to families.”
Currently, a substantial one-third of the district’s budget is allocated to special education services. This new school is anticipated to streamline operations and perhaps reduce long-term costs.
For parents like Kiara Luna, whose 9-year-old son has autism, the announcement offers immense hope. “This is the best news I’ve heard in a very long time,” Luna shared. “Its a transformational step forward for both the district and our family.”
