Upcoming Forecasts for La Plata: Insights from SMN on Travel Timing

by James Carter Senior News Editor

In the next few days, the central and northeast region of Argentina could face one of the most anticipated meteorological phenomena of the season: the storm of Santa Rosa. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) said that it could affect silver and surroundings with heavy rains and storms.

The storm of Santa Rosa, which occurs between the end of August and the beginning of September, has a strong popular tradition, especially for its relationship with the religious festival of Santa Rosa de Lima, held on August 30. However, beyond the cultural dimension, the phenomenon has a well -defined scientific explanation.

José Luis Stella, a climateologist at the SMN, explained that “since mid and late August, the atmosphere begins to experience significant changes in its circulation due to the proximity of spring.” This generates a combination of warm and humid air, creating the ideal conditions for the development of storms.

This phenomenon is more frequent in the center and northeast of the country, especially in provinces such as Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Entre Ríos, and is not common in the south of the country, such as Patagonia, where the frequency of storms is much lower.

When will the Santa Rosa storm arrive to La Plata?

It is estimated that Santa Rosa’s storm could reach La Plata between August 25 and September 4, which is the most probability period for the phenomenon to develop.

On August 30 of last year, the day of the religious ephemeris, there was a strong storm that lasted until the next day, where 118 mm of rain were recorded, affecting much of the center of the country, including silver and the city of Buenos Aires.
