A historical moment for which we had to wait 500 years.
King Charles III of England and Pope Leo XIV prayed together at a religious service at the Vatican. The king is the head of the Anglican Church.
It is the first time that a British monarch and the supreme pontiff of the Catholic Church have prayed together at a mass since the Reformation of the 16th century.
This historic moment took place in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican, during the state visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Under the chapel’s famous ceiling, painted by Michelangelo, the service brought together clergy and choirs from both the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England, of which the king is the highest authority.
The visit will be seen as an important symbol of reconciliation.
For the BBC’s Religious Affairs editor, Aleem Maqbool, the symbolism of a Pope and a king praying together almost 500 years after the separation of the Church of England from Rome “is striking.”
Although it is not the first approach and both churches have already come a long way since 1534, when the schism between both churches occurred and they have collaborated on numerous projects and issues of global scope.
The late Pope Francis and the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, even traveled together to South Sudan to try to foster peace.
As a prince, with a deep interest in the faith, the now King Charles had already visited the pontiffs in the Vatican. In turn, Pope Francis was known to have great respect for the late Queen Elizabeth.
So, although the images from the Vatican this Thursday will be historic, the foundations for these moments have been laid over decades and, indeed, centuries of rapprochement.
