Mark Kelly: Astronaut Senator Faces Trump Legal Battle & Weighs 2024 Run

WASHINGTON – Senator Mark Kelly, the Arizona Democrat and former astronaut, announced he is “seriously considering” a run for the presidency, adding another potential contender to a field that already includes Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom. The announcement comes as Kelly faces ongoing legal challenges stemming from a public disagreement with the Pentagon over military orders.

Kelly, 61, distinguished himself from many of his Senate colleagues, highlighting his unique background. “I’m one of the particularly few engineers, I’m the only person with a graduate degree in engineering in the United States Senate. I’ve got combat experience, that’s kind of rare. I spent 25 years in the military,” he said, signaling a potential emphasis on his technical expertise and military service should he launch a campaign. The question of who will challenge former President Donald Trump in 2028 is already gaining momentum and Kelly’s potential entry adds another layer of complexity to the developing political landscape.

Legal Dispute with Pentagon

The legal battles center around a video published by Kelly and five other lawmakers – all with military or intelligence backgrounds – encouraging troops to question orders they believed were illegal. The video was released during a period of scrutiny regarding the legality of U.S. Military strikes targeting alleged narco-trafficking boats off the coast of South America. The Pentagon responded by attempting to demote Kelly’s military rank, a move blocked by a federal judge, as reported by Reuters. A grand jury also declined to charge Kelly with seditious conspiracy.

Despite the court’s intervention, Kelly anticipates further legal action from Trump. “This is not going to end by me going away. I’m going to continue to fight this thing even if it goes all the way to the Supreme Court,” he stated. Critics have characterized the government’s actions against the lawmakers as an attack on free speech and a politically motivated attempt to punish perceived enemies of the Trump administration, as noted by Axios.

Threats and Political Climate

Kelly also revealed he has received death threats, extending to his wife, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who survived a near-fatal assassination attempt in 2011 when she was shot in the head while serving in the House of Representatives. He attributed the threats, in part, to the rhetoric of Donald Trump. “Donald Trump, is so reckless about what he says,” Kelly said. “There are folks out there that, you know, react to what he said and people listen to him.”

The White House has been contacted for comment by the BBC, but has not yet responded. Alongside Kelly, other potential Democratic candidates include Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump in the 2024 election, and California Governor Gavin Newsom. Harris, in an October interview with the BBC, indicated a possible future presidential run and expressed confidence that a woman would one day hold the office.

Trump’s Future and Potential Successors

Despite the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms, Trump has not ruled out a future run. He has also publicly suggested Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential successors, describing them as “unstoppable.”

As the 2028 election cycle begins to take shape, Senator Kelly’s decision will be closely watched. His unique background and willingness to challenge the status quo could position him as a significant contender, particularly as the legal battles continue to unfold. The coming months will likely reveal whether he chooses to formally enter the race and what role he will play in shaping the future of the Democratic party.
