In 2020, Microsoft set its ambitious carbon negative target, which involves accelerating initiatives across the company to enhance partnerships and technologies aimed at sustainability. Since the launch of its carbon negative commitment, Microsoft has secured 40 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable energy capacity across 26 countries, collaborating with over 95 utilities and developers through more than 400 contracts. This substantial energy procurement equates to enough power for approximately 10 million U.S. Homes. Currently, 19 GW of this contracted energy is operational, with the remaining capacity expected to come online within the next five years.

Expanding a Decade of Clean Energy Investments

Microsoft’s journey in renewable energy began in 2013 with a modest 110 megawatt (MW) power purchase agreement (PPA) in Texas. This initial step has evolved over a decade into one of the largest clean energy portfolios globally. The early agreements not only supported the company’s cloud services but also laid the groundwork for a series of commercial partnerships that illustrate how corporate demand can lead to a more sustainable and reliable power system.

The impact of Microsoft’s renewable energy initiatives is significant, with an estimated reduction of 25 million tons in reported Scope 2 carbon dioxide emissions, alongside the mobilization of billions of dollars in private investment in the regions where it operates. According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, over 200 global corporations have collectively purchased nearly 200 GW of clean energy since 2008, showcasing a growing trend in corporate sustainability efforts.

Driving Innovation and Community Benefits

Microsoft’s procurement strategies have not only facilitated substantial energy generation but have also catalyzed market investment through scalable and repeatable models. The company has established partnerships with more than 95 energy suppliers, focusing on community-driven benefits. Projects such as the 500 MW PPA with Sol Systems and a 250 MW PPA with Volt Energy Utility have provided local training and job opportunities while supporting nonprofit organizations and habitat restoration efforts. Microsoft has also signed over 1.5 GW of distributed solar agreements, delivering clean energy directly to hundreds of communities.

As we approach 2030, the demand for clean electricity will only increase, driven by the electrification of various sectors, including transportation and heating. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has identified this period as the “Age of Electricity,” emphasizing the urgent need for affordable and reliable clean energy solutions.

Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to sustainability includes not only renewable energy but also a diverse range of carbon-free technologies. This includes partnerships on fusion energy projects and investments in carbon capture technology. The company’s Climate Innovation Fund has allocated $806 million to support initiatives advancing carbon-free power and energy management solutions, with 38% of the funds directed toward Energy Systems.

As part of its strategic vision, Microsoft is also leveraging AI-driven tools to design and efficiently deploy new power technologies that enhance grid operations. Collaborations with organizations like Idaho National Laboratory and the Midcontinental System Operator are examples of how Microsoft is pushing the envelope on energy innovation.
