MetroHealth Earns Highest Nursing Honor: Magnet Designation with Distinction

Cleveland, Ohio – The MetroHealth System has achieved a rare and significant milestone in nursing care, earning its fifth Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This time, though, the recognition comes with a special distinction – making MetroHealth the only hospital in Ohio to reach the program’s highest honor. The Magnet Recognition Program® is widely considered the gold standard for nursing excellence, and this achievement underscores MetroHealth’s unwavering commitment to patient care and a supportive environment for its nursing staff.

Fewer than 2% of the approximately 6,000 hospitals nationwide have attained Magnet status five times, demonstrating a sustained dedication to the highest standards of nursing practice. Even more exclusive, only about 1.25% of those five-time Magnet hospitals have been awarded the “with Distinction” designation, signifying an exceptional level of performance and innovation. This recognition highlights MetroHealth’s dedication to not just meeting, but exceeding, the rigorous requirements set forth by the ANCC.

“This recognition affirms what we already know to be true: the nurses at MetroHealth are exceptional,” said Candace Mori, PhD, RN, APRN, ACNS-BC, NEA-BC, ONC, Senior Vice President, System Chief Nursing and Patient Care Services Officer. “Achieving Magnet designation once is significant. Sustaining it across five cycles reflects unwavering commitment, professional excellence and a deeply rooted culture of nursing leadership.”

The ANCC’s Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing leadership, patient care, and innovation. Hospitals seeking Magnet recognition undergo a comprehensive evaluation process every four years, requiring them to showcase sustained improvements in key areas. MetroHealth’s success in achieving this distinction is a testament to the dedication and expertise of its more than 2,000 nurses.

Exemplary Practices Recognized

Beyond the overall Magnet with Distinction designation, MetroHealth was also recognized for several specific “exemplars” – exceptional nursing practices that serve as models for other healthcare organizations. Notably, the ANCC highlighted that nearly 83% of MetroHealth nurses hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher, exceeding the national benchmark of 80%. This commitment to advanced education contributes to a higher level of clinical expertise and improved patient outcomes. You can learn more about the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® here.

The ANCC also cited high job satisfaction rates among MetroHealth nurses, coupled with a strong appreciation for the health system’s mission as a safety-net hospital serving the community. This commitment extends beyond traditional medical care, with nurses actively involved in addressing the social drivers of health – factors like access to housing, food security, transportation, and education – that significantly impact a patient’s well-being. MetroHealth nurses lead initiatives to provide essential resources to families in need, demonstrating a holistic approach to patient care.

A Commitment to the Community

MetroHealth’s role as Cuyahoga County’s safety-net health system is central to its mission. As outlined on their website, the system is dedicated to caring for anyone and everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. This commitment is deeply ingrained in the culture of the nursing staff, who consistently demonstrate compassion and dedication to serving the community’s most vulnerable populations. Founded in 1837, MetroHealth operates four hospitals, four emergency departments, and more than 20 health centers throughout Cuyahoga County, serving over 300,000 patients annually.

“We all share in this honor, and it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate what it says about MetroHealth’s caregivers: We are a team that shows up every day to do what is best for our patients and this community,” Dr. Mori added. The Magnet with Distinction designation not only recognizes the current excellence of MetroHealth’s nursing staff but also positions the system as a leader in shaping the future of nursing care.

As MetroHealth continues to innovate and expand its services, the focus remains on providing exceptional, patient-centered care. The health system is committed to attracting and retaining top nursing talent, offering opportunities for professional development and growth.
