Bay Area Ramadan 2024: Iftar & Suhoor Restaurant Guide

by James Carter Senior News Editor

As Ramadan 2026 approaches, Muslims across the San Francisco Bay Area are beginning to plan for the month of fasting and spiritual reflection. Finding convenient and welcoming places to break the rapid (Iftar) and enjoy the pre-dawn meal (Suhoor) is a key part of the experience. This year, a diverse range of restaurants and community events are stepping up to meet the needs of the Bay Area’s Muslim population, offering everything from traditional buffets to late-night festivals.

The observance of Ramadan requires abstaining from food and drink from dawn until sunset, making the Iftar meal a particularly essential moment for community and nourishment. Even as any restaurant can serve as a gathering place, several establishments throughout the Bay Area are specifically catering to those observing the fast with special menus and extended hours. Finding options for Suhoor, the meal consumed before dawn, can be more challenging, but a growing number of events are emerging to fill that need.

Iftar Dining Options Across the Bay Area

A wide array of restaurants are preparing to offer Iftar meals throughout the Bay Area. In San Francisco, options include Port of Peri-Peri, Nob Hill Pizza and Shawarma, Halal City, Piccolo Italia, Mustafio’s Pizza, Jamra Pizzeria & Grill, Paris Pizza & Grill, Falafel City, Karhai House and Lahore Karahi By Alhamra. Further south, iJAVA Halal California Bistro in San José and Charminar Restaurant, with locations in Sunnyvale and Fremont, are preparing to welcome diners. East Bay residents can find Iftar options at Maiwand Village in Newark, 523 Southern Halal BBQ and Jaji in Oakland, and a variety of choices in Fremont including Falafel Fremont, BBQ Sizzle, Mirchi, Kabab Fusion, Bismillah Restaurant, Chick n Travel, and Deccan Morsel.

Beyond these, several other restaurants are listed as potential Iftar destinations, including Arya Steakhouse in Palo Alto, Iraklis in Santa Clara, Chai & Co in Concord, Safar by Karimi in Cupertino, Wayback Burger in Milpitas, Maya Halal Taqueria, World Famous Hotboys, Halal Burgers and More, Gabriella’s Pizza, Zoco, and The Halal Guys – all in Oakland. KQED staffers likewise frequently recommend local restaurants for Iftar specials, though specific details are still emerging as the month approaches.

Suhoor Festivities and Late-Night Options

Finding restaurants open for Suhoor can be more difficult, but several events are planned to provide a communal pre-dawn meal. Halalfest is bringing back its popular SuhoorFest at the NewPark Mall in Newark on March 7, with the festival traditionally running from 11 p.m. To 5 a.m. Explore.com notes Fremont’s accessibility, making it a convenient location for those traveling from San Francisco or San Jose.

Additional Suhoor Fests are planned at UC Berkeley on February 27, starting at 11:30 p.m., organized by the UC Berkeley Pakistani Student Association and Halal Bites and Bazaar, and in San José at the Suffa Suhoor Fest on February 28, from 11 p.m. To 3 a.m., with another festival at the city’s Silver Creek Muslim Community Center extending until 4 a.m. For those seeking a more traditional late-night option, IHOP locations in Daly City and South San Francisco remain open 24 hours.

Late-Night Cafes for Reflection

For those who prefer a quieter setting, the Bay Area boasts numerous coffee and tea shops that welcome night owls. These cafes can provide a peaceful space for reflection and community during the unique sleep schedule often associated with Ramadan.

As Ramadan 2026 draws nearer, more restaurants and events are expected to announce their offerings. Community members are encouraged to check with local establishments and organizations for the most up-to-date information. The growing number of options available demonstrates the increasing recognition and support for the Muslim community in the Bay Area.
