Organizations are increasingly granting artificial intelligence (AI) services access to sensitive cloud environments, creating a growing exposure gap as security teams struggle to keep pace with the rapidly evolving threat landscape. A recent report highlights a concerning trend: a significant number of organizations are assigning administrative privileges to AI services, potentially opening the door to substantial risk.

The expanding use of AI, while offering numerous benefits, introduces new complexities to cloud security. Traditional security models are often ill-equipped to handle the unique challenges posed by AI-driven systems, particularly regarding permissions and access control. This represents compounded by the fact that many organizations lack a clear understanding of the data AI services are accessing and how that data is being used.

According to findings, 18% of organizations have granted AI services administrative permissions. This level of access allows AI services to make significant changes to cloud configurations, potentially leading to misconfigurations, data breaches, or service disruptions. The report underscores the need for organizations to carefully review and restrict the permissions granted to AI services, adopting a principle of least privilege.

The issue isn’t simply about over-permissioning; it’s also about visibility. AWS and AI Service Opt-Out Policies

Recognizing the potential privacy and security concerns, cloud providers are beginning to offer tools to help organizations manage AI service data usage. Amazon Web Services (AWS), for example, provides AI services opt-out policies that allow organizations to control data collection for AWS AI services across their accounts. AWS explains that opting out deletes historical content shared with AWS for service improvement, though content required for service functionality remains.

However, opting out isn’t a simple solution. Organizations must carefully consider the trade-offs between data privacy and service performance. The effectiveness of opt-out policies depends on organizations actively implementing and monitoring them.

Managing Connectors and Delegating Rights

Microsoft is also addressing the challenges of AI access control through its Copilot connectors. These connectors enable organizations to build tailored integrations to enhance their AI systems. Microsoft recommends delegating administrative rights to AI Administrators to manage connectors independently, reducing reliance on Global Administrators for tasks like application registration and consent to API permissions.

This delegation of responsibility is a crucial step in empowering security teams to effectively manage AI-related risks. However, it’s essential to maintain organizational control and ensure that AI Administrators have the necessary training, and expertise.

The increasing reliance on AI agents necessitates a shift in how organizations approach access control and permission management. Cerbos highlights the growing trend of companies creating AI agents – chatbots that answer user questions based on company data – and the need for robust permissioning frameworks to govern their access.

As AI continues to evolve, organizations must proactively address the widening exposure gap in the cloud. This requires a combination of robust security policies, advanced monitoring tools, and a commitment to continuous improvement. The next step for many organizations will be a thorough assessment of their current AI permissions and a plan to implement more granular controls.
