Peruvian Air Force Helicopter with 15 Onboard Lost Contact | Search Underway

by Omar El Sayed - World Editor

Lima, Peru – A Peruvian Air Force (FAP) helicopter went missing on Sunday, February 22nd, while en route from Pisco, in the Ica region, to Chala, in Arequipa, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation. The Mi-17 transport helicopter was carrying a total of 15 people – four crew members and 11 passengers – when communication was lost at approximately 4:30 p.m. Local time, according to a statement released by the FAP.

The missing aircraft, a Russian-made Mi-17, is a multi-purpose transport model frequently used by the Peruvian Armed Forces for logistical operations and missions in remote areas. The FAP has activated its Search and Rescue (SAR) system, deploying air and land resources in an effort to locate the helicopter and those on board. The incident has prompted immediate concern and a swift response from the Peruvian military.

The crew of the Mi-17 included Major FAP Sergio Paucar Centurión and Lieutenant FAP Luis Huerta Cárcamo as pilots, with First Sergeant FAP Kamila Anchajuri Jove and Second Sergeant FAP Leiner Aguirre Huamán completing the flight crew, the FAP confirmed in its official statement. Authorities have reportedly been in contact with the families of those on board to provide support and updates as the search continues.

Ground forces, including special forces and the National Police of Peru (PNP), are converging on the last known geographical position of the helicopter, according to reports. The FAP stated that the aircraft was on a “programmed mission” when contact was lost. The challenging terrain along the route, which traverses coastal regions, is likely complicating search efforts.

The loss of communication occurred while the helicopter was flying between Pisco and Chala, both cities situated near Peru’s Pacific coast, as reported by the Associated Press. The FAP’s Directorate of Information and Aerospace Interests issued the statement on February 22nd, detailing the activation of the search and rescue protocol.

This incident marks the second recent event involving a Mi-17 helicopter in Peru. In October, another Mi-17 crashed in a gold mining region, resulting in the death of a military officer involved in combating illegal mining activities, according to the Associated Press. The Mi-17 helicopters were acquired by Peru between 1990 and 2014.

The ongoing search and rescue operation is being closely monitored by Peruvian authorities. The FAP has not yet released information regarding potential causes for the loss of communication, and the focus remains on locating the aircraft and ensuring the safety of those on board. The Superintendency of National Roads of Peru (SUTRAN) has reported 16 national highways with restricted traffic due to recent rains and landslides, potentially impacting access to the search area.

As of Monday, February 23rd, the FAP continues to deploy resources and coordinate with other agencies in the search effort. The next steps will involve a thorough examination of the flight path and surrounding terrain, as well as continued communication with families. The investigation into the cause of the communication loss will commence once the aircraft is located.
