Dick Advocaat Resigns as Curaçao Coach After World Cup Qualification

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

WILLEMSTAD, Curaçao – A stunning development has shaken Curaçao football as Dick Advocaat has stepped down as head coach of the national team, just months before their inaugural appearance at the FIFA World Cup. The 78-year-old Dutchman, who guided the Caribbean nation to a historic qualification, will not lead the team in this summer’s tournament, citing personal reasons related to his daughter’s health. This unexpected change comes as Curaçao prepares to face Germany in their opening Group E match on June 14 in Houston.

Advocaat’s departure marks the finish of a two-year tenure that culminated in a remarkable achievement for the small island nation of approximately 156,115 people. Curaçao’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup made them the smallest nation in the competition’s history to reach the finals, surpassing Iceland’s population of 350,000.

A Career Highlight Cut Short

“I’ve always said family is above football. So this is a self-evident decision,” Advocaat reportedly stated, expressing his commitment to his family during this challenging time. “But of course that doesn’t change the fact that I’m going to miss Curaçao, the people there and my colleagues extremely much.” He described leading Curaçao to the World Cup as “the craziest thing” he had achieved in a managerial career spanning nearly four decades, a career that too included leading the Netherlands and South Korea at previous World Cup tournaments in 1994 and 2006, respectively.

Advocaat’s team achieved an unbeaten qualifying campaign, navigating a group consisting of Bermuda, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica. Their qualification was sealed with a draw against Jamaica in November, a moment of jubilation for the nation. ESPN reported that Advocaat would have turn into the oldest coach in World Cup history.

Rutten Takes the Reins

The Curaçao Football Association has swiftly appointed fellow Dutchman Fred Rutten as Advocaat’s replacement. Rutten, 63, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously managed clubs such as PSV Eindhoven, Anderlecht, and Feyenoord. He also managed Schalke and Twente. The association chairman, Gilbert Martina, stated that Advocaat’s decision was “respectable” and expressed gratitude for the impact he had on Curaçao football.

In addition to Rutten’s appointment, Advocaat’s right-hand man, Cor Pot, and team doctor, Casper van Eyck, have also stepped down from their roles, providing further disruption to the team’s preparations. Yet, the remaining coaching staff will continue in their positions.

Looking Ahead for Curaçao

Rutten inherits a team brimming with potential, including players like Juninho Bacuna (formerly of Rangers and Birmingham City), his brother Leandro Bacuna (formerly of Aston Villa), Jordi Paulina of Fortuna Dusseldorf, and Sheffield United’s Tahith Chong. The team’s historic qualification has ignited a sense of national pride and excitement, despite the change in leadership.

Curaçao’s Group E also includes Germany, as well as two other teams yet to be determined through the final stages of World Cup qualifying. The team’s debut in the tournament will be a significant moment for Caribbean football and a testament to the progress made under Advocaat’s guidance.

The focus now shifts to Rutten’s ability to quickly integrate into the team and prepare them for the challenges ahead. The coming months will be crucial as Curaçao strives to make a mark on the world stage and build upon the foundation laid by their departing coach. The team’s performance in the World Cup will undoubtedly be closely watched by football fans around the globe.
