Jharkhand Air Ambulance Crash: 1 Dead, Investigation Launched

by Omar El Sayed - World Editor

A medical evacuation flight traveling from Ranchi to Delhi crashed Monday evening in Jharkhand’s Chatra district, resulting in one confirmed fatality. The deceased has been identified as Sanjay Kumar, 41, a patient with severe burn injuries who was being transported for advanced medical care. The incident has prompted an investigation by aviation authorities and raised questions about the safety of air ambulance services in the region.

The aircraft, a Beechcraft King Air BE9L registered as VT-AJV and operated by Redbird Airways Private Limited, lost contact with Air Traffic Control approximately 100 nautical miles southeast of Varanasi at 7:34 pm local time, according to a statement released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The flight had departed from Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Airport at 7:11 pm. The crash site is located in the Kasiyatu forest area of Simaria, near Chatra.

A total of seven individuals were onboard the ill-fated flight, including two pilots, Captain Vivek Vikas Bhagat and Captain Savrajdeep Singh, the patient, Sanjay Kumar, and four medical personnel: Archana Devi and Dhuru Kumar (attendants), Dr. Vikas Kumar Gupta (doctor), and Sachin Kumar Mishra (paramedic). Search and rescue teams from the district administration reached the crash site, and an investigation team from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has been dispatched to determine the cause of the accident.

Dr. Anant Sinha, chief plastic surgeon at Devnika Hospital, shared details about the patient’s condition prior to the flight. Sanjay Kumar, the son of late Rameshwar Sahu, had been admitted to Devkamal Hospital on February 16 with 65 percent burn injuries. “His condition was critical, and the family made the difficult decision to transfer him to a more specialized medical center in Delhi for advanced treatment,” Dr. Sinha told India Today. Kumar was discharged from the hospital around 4:30 pm on Monday before being transported to the airport.

Aircraft Details and Flight Path

The Beechcraft King Air BE9L, a popular model for air ambulance services, is a twin-turboprop aircraft known for its reliability and ability to operate from shorter runways. Livemint reported that the aircraft was operating on the Ranchi–Delhi sector and was expected to land in the capital around 10 pm local time. The loss of communication with Kolkata Air Traffic Control occurred while the aircraft was approximately 100 nautical miles southeast of Varanasi, raising concerns about potential technical issues or external factors contributing to the crash.

Investigation Underway

The AAIB investigation will focus on a range of factors, including the aircraft’s maintenance records, weather conditions at the time of the flight, pilot experience, and any potential mechanical failures. The DGCA has confirmed that all necessary protocols are being followed to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. ABP Live reported that the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) was activated at 8:05 pm after radar and radio contact were lost, initiating search and rescue operations.

The incident highlights the inherent risks associated with air travel, particularly in challenging terrain and during nighttime operations. While air ambulance services provide critical transport for patients in demand of urgent medical attention, ensuring the highest safety standards is paramount. The outcome of the AAIB investigation will be crucial in identifying any contributing factors to the crash and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Authorities are currently focused on recovering the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, which will provide valuable insights into the final moments of the flight. The investigation is expected to take several weeks or months to complete, and a preliminary report may be released sooner. The crash serves as a stark reminder of the dedication and risks faced by medical personnel and aviation professionals who work tirelessly to provide life-saving services.

What comes next is a detailed forensic analysis of the wreckage and a thorough review of the flight’s operational history. The findings will be critical for understanding the sequence of events leading to the crash and for making recommendations to enhance aviation safety protocols.
