A new three-year agreement between AIP Publishing (AIPP) and the Max Planck Society promises to reshape access to scientific research, bolstering open science initiatives and streamlining the publishing process for researchers. The deal, formalized through the AIP Fusion model, aims to remove barriers to knowledge dissemination and foster a more equitable research landscape.
The collaboration, announced February 23, 2026, builds upon a long-standing partnership between the two organizations. Negotiated by the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) on behalf of the Society, the agreement provides researchers affiliated with Max Planck Institutes with comprehensive read access to AIP Publishing’s entire journal portfolio. Crucially, it also enables these researchers to publish their work open access in all AIP Publishing and partner titles – including gold open access journals – without incurring individual article processing charges. This shift represents a significant step towards wider accessibility of scientific findings.
AIP Fusion is designed as an institution-centered open access model, developed in consultation with libraries and consortia globally. It moves away from traditional per-article transaction fees, offering institutions a scalable and cost-predictable way to support open publishing while upholding editorial independence. According to AIP Publishing, this model reduces administrative complexity and promotes equitable participation in open research.
