Audiences will have twelve distinct ways to experience the upcoming sci-fi film, Project Hail Mary, when it opens on March 20, 2026, according to a promotional campaign led by directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
The filmmakers recently embarked on a tour of Los Angeles theaters to demonstrate the range of formats available, from standard screenings to highly immersive options. Lord explained that the film was specifically designed with large-format presentation in mind, utilizing a 1:43 aspect ratio for IMAX showings. The production employed Alexa 65 cameras with a large-format sensor, anticipating the demands of these premium experiences.
Among the options available are Imax 1:43, Dolby Cinema, Imax 1:85, Screenx, HDR by Barco, D-Box, 4DX, MX4D, Imax 70mm, 5 perf 70mm, premium large format and standard formats. A unique offering is a 70mm, 15 perf IMAX version, created using a film-out process developed by cinematographer Greig Fraser, previously utilized on Dune and The Batman, to impart a film-like warmth to the digitally-shot footage.
The immersive experiences extend beyond visual fidelity. D-Box features seats that synchronize with the on-screen action, providing tactile feedback. 4DX, as experienced by Miller during the promotional tour, incorporates motion and environmental effects, such as seat movement and air blasts.
Amazon MGM Studios, the distributor of Project Hail Mary, appears to be embracing these diverse theatrical options as a key component of its release strategy. This approach reflects a broader industry trend toward offering differentiated cinema experiences in the wake of the pandemic, catering to audiences seeking events that cannot be easily replicated at home.
The film centers on Ryland Grace, a science teacher played by Ryan Gosling, who awakens on a spaceship with amnesia and must unravel a mission to save Earth from a solar crisis.
As of February 25, 2026, Amazon MGM Studios has not announced specific locations for the 70mm and 5-perf 70mm screenings of Project Hail Mary, but is expected to release a list of participating theaters in the coming weeks.
