MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team launched its home season with a resounding 19-6 victory over Ohio on Wednesday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The win improves the Mountaineers’ record to 6-1 on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 1-7. The offensive explosion showcased the power and depth of the WVU lineup, signaling a strong start to their home schedule.
Sophomore Matt Ineich led the charge, delivering a stellar performance against his former team. He went 4-for-5 at the plate, racking up two doubles, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Seniors Brock Wills and Matthew Graveline also contributed with home runs, while senior Paul Schoenfeld notched both a double and a triple, driving in three runs alongside Wills. The Mountaineers’ offensive prowess was on full display throughout the afternoon.
The pitching staff also played a key role in the victory, with nine Mountaineers taking the mound. David Hagen earned the win, delivering two scoreless innings of relief. The team’s ability to utilize multiple pitchers effectively helped to maintain control of the game and secure the decisive win.
Early Lead and Offensive Surge
West Virginia established an early lead with a single run in the first inning. The second inning saw a significant surge, with Schoenfeld capping off a four-run inning with a two-run triple. WVU continued to build momentum, adding another run in the third before Wills blasted a three-run home run in the fourth, extending the lead to 9-0. This early offensive output set the tone for the remainder of the game.
Ohio attempted to rally, scoring four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. However, the Mountaineers responded emphatically with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Graveline launched a two-run home run – his third of the season – before Ineich drove in two more with a well-placed double. Junior Armani Guzman added to the scoring with a sacrifice fly, extending the Mountaineers’ advantage.
Mountaineers Extend Dominance in Eighth
The Mountaineers continued to pour on the runs in the eighth inning, adding five more to their total. A wild pitch, a two-run double by freshman Colton Sims, and a two-run single by redshirt-freshman Ryan Maggy all contributed to the scoring outburst. This late-game surge solidified the Mountaineers’ dominant performance.
