Incheon Mayor Visits UK Rugby School & Wycombe Abbey

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Incheon, South Korea is aggressively pursuing its ambition to become a leading global education hub, with Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok recently concluding a trip to the United Kingdom to solidify partnerships with two of Britain’s most prestigious schools: Wycombe Abbey and Rugby School. The agreements, signed this week, signal a significant step towards attracting international educational institutions and bolstering Incheon’s reputation as a destination for high-quality learning.

The initiative comes as Incheon seeks to diversify its economy and attract a more international population. Establishing world-class educational facilities is seen as a key component of this strategy, offering both opportunities for Korean students and attracting families from abroad. Mayor Yoo’s visit underscores the city’s commitment to investing in education and fostering collaboration with leading institutions worldwide. The focus on British schools reflects a desire to tap into the UK’s long-standing tradition of academic excellence and international outlook.

Wycombe Abbey to Establish New Campus in Incheon

On February 24th, Mayor Yoo visited Wycombe Abbey, a historic girls’ school founded in 1896 in Buckinghamshire and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Peter Warren, the school’s chairman of council. According to city officials, the agreement outlines cooperation on the creation of a new campus in Incheon, ensuring Wycombe Abbey’s compliance with Korean regulations, and defining the responsibilities of both the school and the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) during the preparatory phase.

Wycombe Abbey was selected as the preferred bidder for an international school in Incheon’s Midan City in March of last year, as reported by Asia Economy. The two sides plan to finalize a formal project agreement in the first half of 2026, with the goal of opening the school in the second half of 2028. The IFEZ is currently reviewing construction plans for classrooms and related facilities on the site.

Rugby School Partnership Aims to Bring 450-Year Tradition to Songdo

In addition to the agreement with Wycombe Abbey, Mayor Yoo as well visited Rugby School, a boys’ school with a history stretching back over 450 years. He signed a separate MOU with the school, aiming to attract Rugby School to establish a presence in Songdo, Incheon. Business Korea reported that Rugby School “sincerely hopes that Incheon will be the perfect location for its educational philosophy,” according to Mayor Yoo.

The city is actively working to attract both schools to Songdo and Yeongjongdo, aiming to create a comprehensive global educational environment. Wycombe Abbey, ranked third in the 2022 league table of British private schools by The Sunday Times, brings a strong academic record to the partnership. The collaboration with Rugby School, a school steeped in history and tradition, further strengthens Incheon’s position as an emerging international education destination.

What’s Next for Incheon’s Education Hub Ambitions?

The signing of these MOUs represents a crucial step forward for Incheon’s ambitious plans. The next key milestone will be the finalization of the project agreement with Wycombe Abbey in the first half of 2026, followed by the commencement of construction. The city will also continue negotiations with Rugby School to solidify their plans for a campus in Songdo. The successful establishment of these schools will not only enhance educational opportunities for students in Incheon but also contribute to the city’s economic growth and international profile.
