Paragould, Arkansas – A significant shift in the healthcare landscape of eastern Arkansas has taken place with the finalization of a merger between Memphis-based Baptist Memorial Health Care and Arkansas Methodist Medical Center (AMMC). The agreement, initially signaled by a shared mission agreement last April, promises expanded access to comprehensive medical services for the region. This consolidation brings together the resources of a large regional healthcare system with a long-standing community hospital, aiming to bolster healthcare delivery in a largely rural area.
The merger transfers all assets of AMMC to Baptist Memorial Health Care, encompassing the 129-bed hospital itself, the 91-bed Chateau on the Ridge Assisted Living facility and eight affiliated medical clinics. According to a news release, the move is intended to strengthen Baptist Memorial’s commitment to providing “exceptional and affordable health care” to the community. Baptist Memorial now operates three hospitals within the state of Arkansas, located in Craighead, Crittenden, and Greene counties, solidifying its presence in the region.
Leading the Paragould hospital as its new CEO and administrator is Melanie Edens, formerly the chief operating officer of NEA Baptist. She assumes the role following the retirement of Brad Bloemer, who had served as the hospital’s leader since July 2023. Jason Little, president and CEO of Baptist Memorial Health Care, emphasized the positive impact of the merger, stating, “Completing the merger between Baptist Memorial Health Care and Arkansas Methodist Medical Center opens a new chapter for sustained access to comprehensive health care in East Arkansas and the South.”
Expanding Baptist Memorial’s Footprint
The merger increases Baptist Memorial Health Care’s total hospital count to 25 hospitals across its network, further establishing the organization as one of the largest not-for-profit health care systems in the United States. The integration of AMMC’s facilities and over 500 employees into the Baptist Memorial system represents a substantial expansion of its reach and capabilities. The transition for AMMC employees to Baptist Memorial Health Care was effective immediately upon the merger’s completion on February 28, 2026.
Services Offered at AMMC
Arkansas Methodist Medical Center, now operating under the Baptist Memorial umbrella, provides a wide range of medical services to the Paragould community and surrounding areas. These include primary care, women’s services, dermatology, neurology, orthopaedics, surgery, urgent care, plastic surgery, and diagnostics & imaging, as detailed on the Arkansas Methodist Medical Center website. The hospital has long been a trusted provider of healthcare in the region, and Baptist Memorial intends to build upon that foundation.
A Shared Mission Agreement
The path to this merger began with a shared mission agreement signed in April 2025, as reported by Baptist Press. This initial agreement laid the groundwork for the comprehensive integration of the two organizations, culminating in the transfer of assets and leadership changes announced this week. The agreement reflects a broader trend of healthcare consolidation aimed at improving efficiency and expanding access to specialized care.
The completion of this merger marks a pivotal moment for healthcare access in eastern Arkansas. As Baptist Memorial Health Care integrates AMMC into its network, the focus will likely turn to streamlining operations, enhancing service offerings, and ensuring continued access to quality care for the community. The long-term effects of this consolidation on healthcare costs and patient outcomes will be closely watched.
What comes next will involve the full integration of AMMC’s systems and personnel into Baptist Memorial’s established infrastructure. Further announcements regarding specific service enhancements and community outreach initiatives are anticipated in the coming months.
