Czech Police Knew About Chřibská Killer’s Weapons, Witnesses Say

Chřibská, Czech Republic – Questions are mounting regarding whether Czech police were aware of the arsenal of weapons possessed by the man who carried out a deadly shooting at a municipal office in January. Witnesses are coming forward with claims that they alerted authorities to the suspect’s potential danger and the presence of firearms months before the attack, which left one person dead and six others injured.

The January 19th shooting in Chřibská prompted a large-scale police response and a national conversation about gun control and public safety. The shooter, a 39-year-traditional man, died at the scene, reportedly by suicide. He had illegally possessed two pistols and a rifle during the attack, according to police reports. However, emerging testimony suggests that concerns about the man’s behavior and potential access to weapons were raised with law enforcement much earlier.

According to reports, police initially investigated the man in connection with the death of an acquaintance in June 2025. The acquaintance died from what was initially believed to be a drug overdose, though an autopsy later indicated a heart attack. During this initial investigation, witnesses say they explicitly warned police about the man’s unstable behavior and the possibility he owned firearms. One resident of Chřibská, speaking anonymously, recounted a conversation with a police officer, stating she expressed fear of the man, describing him as a drug user living beyond his means and harboring a suspicious collection of weapons. “I told them I suspected he had some weapons at home,” the witness said.

The witness stated the conversation took place on the outskirts of Varnsdorf, and she was not invited to the police station for a formal interview. It remains unclear whether her statement was officially recorded.

The timing of these concerns is particularly sensitive, coming just six months before the shooting at the municipal office. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the initial investigation into the death of the man’s acquaintance.

The initial investigation focused on a possible charge of manslaughter, but ultimately no charges were filed. The man was also previously investigated for alleged drug possession and driving without a license, but again, no charges were brought.

The mayor of Chřibská, Jan Macháč, confirmed to CNN Prima News shortly after the shooting that the perpetrator had been investigated in the past regarding the death of his friend. He stated, “He was investigated regarding the death of his friend from an overdose, where the police allegedly could not prove his guilt. He was investigated for possession and distribution of drugs, where the police also could not prove his guilt. He was allegedly investigated for driving a vehicle without a driver’s license and similar offenses.”

The current investigation is focused on determining whether police adequately followed up on the information they received regarding the suspect’s potential access to weapons. The police maintain they were unaware of any significant arsenal of firearms prior to the shooting. However, the emerging witness accounts are casting doubt on that assertion.

The incident has reignited debate about the adequacy of Czech Republic’s gun control laws and the effectiveness of police investigations into potentially dangerous individuals.

As the investigation continues, authorities are reviewing protocols for handling reports of potential threats and assessing whether changes are needed to improve communication and information sharing between law enforcement agencies. The focus remains on understanding the full sequence of events leading up to the tragic shooting and ensuring that lessons are learned to prevent similar incidents in the future.

What comes next is a thorough review of police procedures and a potential re-evaluation of existing gun control measures. The findings of the ongoing investigation will likely shape the debate surrounding public safety and law enforcement accountability in the Czech Republic.
