Charlotte, N.C. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team opens its third season competing in the American Conference this Friday, embarking on a three-game series against the Charlotte 49ers. The Owls (17-6) are aiming to continue their dominance in the conference, seeking a third consecutive regular season championship and a third straight series victory over Charlotte.
FAU enters the series on a five-game winning streak, having won 12 of their last 14 contests. During this stretch, the team has outscored opponents by a significant margin, 99-19, demonstrating a potent offensive attack. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM on Friday, with subsequent games slated for 1:00 PM on Saturday and 12:00 PM on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Owls are coming off a dominant performance against FGCU, securing a 14-5 run-rule victory where they set a season-high in both runs and hits. Six FAU players recorded multiple hits in the game, highlighted by a career-best three hits from senior first baseman Yani Guzman. The team scored in every inning and showcased power with home runs from sophomore Lily Holtje and senior catcher Chloe Yeatts.
Owls Lead American Conference in Multiple Categories
Florida Atlantic boasts a strong statistical profile, leading the American Conference in several key offensive categories. As a team, they lead the conference in batting average (.324), with 147 runs scored on 188 hits, including 43 doubles and 130 RBIs. They similarly excel in plate discipline, leading in walks (81) and on-base percentage (.420). Defensively, the Owls have allowed only 69 runs, with a team fielding percentage of .982, and their pitching staff has recorded 156 strikeouts while maintaining a .232 opposing batting average. Sophomore Lily Holtje is a key offensive force for the Owls, leading the team in batting average (.448), hits (26), on-base percentage (.553), and doubles (nine). She also shares the team lead in home runs with four and has reached base in 15 consecutive games. Redshirt junior outfielder Kylie Hammonds has also contributed with four home runs and a team-leading 23 runs scored, recently setting a program record for career hit-by-pitches with 20.
Courtney Named American Pitcher of the Week
Senior pitcher Autumn Courtney, a 2025 All-American and the unanimous American Conference Pitcher of the Year, has started the 2026 season strong. She was named American Pitcher of the Week and currently leads the team with 46 strikeouts and a 2.70 ERA. Head Coach Jordan Clark, in her fourth season, has a record of 138-54 and has twice been recognized as the American Conference Coaching Staff of the Year (2024, 2025).
Charlotte Looking to Upset Ranked Opponents
The Charlotte 49ers, led by second-year Head Coach Courtney Breault (42-37 record), present a challenging opponent. Junior outfielder Teagen Ritchie leads the 49ers and the American Conference with seven home runs, while reigning American Player of the Year Jenna Lord has tallied 29 hits and 23 runs. Sophomore pitcher Taylor Jones leads the conference with 11 starts in the circle. The 49ers have demonstrated the ability to compete with top teams, having secured wins against then-No. 23 Clemson and No. 14 Virginia Tech.
