A gastroenteritis outbreak affecting 48 people in Narón, A Coruña, has been confirmed by the Galician Health Service (Consellería de Sanidade), with the source traced to meals served at the Manuela Pérez Sequeiros Community Center, operated by the company DomusVi.
Initial reports indicated eight cases linked to the center’s day care program, but the number of affected individuals has risen sharply, particularly following an event held at the Pazo da Cultura on March 2nd and 3rd. According to health officials, 39 of the confirmed cases are attendees of the school event who consumed meals provided by the community center on March 3rd.
The symptoms reported by those affected are described as mild, consisting of short-term diarrhea and the majority have not required hospitalization, the Consellería de Sanidade stated. An inspection team was immediately dispatched to the DomusVi kitchens to collect food samples for analysis, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
The Narón City Council has clarified that it did not organize the lunch associated with the outbreak, which was part of a debate club event promoted by the Association of Entities for the Galician Language (Asociación de Entidades pola Lingua Galega) and managed by an external firm. The council stated it strictly adheres to sanitary protocols for its own events and is offering full collaboration to the regional health authorities.
The affected schools include IES As Telleiras, IES Terra de Trasancos, Canido, and Saturnino Montojo. Health officials are awaiting laboratory results to determine whether the outbreak is caused by a bacterial or viral agent. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities analyzing the collected food samples to pinpoint the exact origin of the contamination.
The local branch of the BNG political party in Narón has announced it will present a motion to the municipal council demanding accountability for the potential contamination of the meals served.
